Kendra and Seth's mom just lost her parents, Grandma and Grandpa Larsen, which means she's "on the verge of tears" (1.41) when she asks Grandpa Sorenson to take the kids while she and their father go on a cruise to fulfill to her parents' last wishes.
Apart from the grief she's processing, Mom sounds like a pretty nice person. She "gushed" (1.86) about how beautiful the Sorensons' home is while dropping off the kids, and she's happy to see her kids again when she gets back from the cruise.
