Feathers Part 3 / Chapter 12 Summary

  • On Sunday, Samantha calls early and says that Frannie can come to their church today, if she wants. Samantha seems to think that going to church is some kind of special treat, but Frannie is not down—she tries to explain to Samantha that she was just going to stay home and watch some Casper the Friendly Ghost.
  • She tells Samantha that she doesn't worry about being saved or anything like that. She tells her that looking out at all that snow last night made her think that it must be how Samantha feels when she's at church—they feel holy at different times in different ways.
  • Samantha persists, though, and Frannie eventually feels badly and agrees to come to church. Oh well. Television will just have to wait.
  • When her mama asks her why she wants to go to church, Frannie says it's because Samantha asked her to go. She doesn't say that she wants to be like Samantha—she wants to know how Samantha saw the real Jesus in the Jesus Boy.
  • Samantha's dad drives them to church, and Frannie squeezes Samantha's hand when they get there. She can't help but think about how hope is everywhere… if they look for it.
