Feathers Part 3 / Chapter 13 Summary

  • On Monday, as Sean and Frannie walk to school together, two girls approach them; they call Sean "pretty boy" and try to get him to talk to them.
  • Frannie tells them that he's deaf, and that he can only communicate in sign language. One girl says that all of his good looks are wasted then, and they both walk off.
  • As they go away, Sean looks upset and Frannie asks him why he even bothers with the hearing girls—he should just try to date some of the pretty deaf girls at his school.
  • Sean brings up the bridge across the highway that he was talking about the other day. He sees the hearing girls as the bridge—they inhabit a world that he can't walk into.
  • Frannie still doesn't understand, but he says that she can't get it, because she gets to inhabit both worlds. She can walk wherever she wants. He has to stay in the deaf world.
