Character Analysis

We don't see much of Charlie's dad, but he's usually trying to talk Rose off a ledge in Charlie's childhood flashbacks. He's one harried man who vaguely has an idea that Rose is going about raising Charlie the wrong way, but doesn't know how to fix it.

Barbershop Quartet

Matt's got one goal, and it involves opening up a barbershop. Basically, his dream of cutting hair is an alternative to coping with Charlie's problems, and when he finally succeeds at snip-snipping off his relationships with the whole family, he gets exactly what he wants: seclusion and his own shop.

If anything, in Matt we can see where Charlie gets his passive nature—if Rose yells at him, Matt shuts down and leaves. He doesn't seem too invested in maintaining relationships with anyone besides his trimming shears, and Charlie's happy to leave him be.
