Marked by Fire Chapter 19 Summary

Monday Afternoon
October 18, 1965

  • Abby is sitting around on a porch with the other women of Ponca City. The topic of discussion today is Trembling Sally. Her latest target? The Lightsey kids.
  • Apparently Sally took it upon herself to lure the kids to her and serve them poisonous tea. Thankfully Mother Barker stopped by just in time to save their little lives.
  • Now the women are all talking about Trembling Sally, fretting that she might actually succeed in harming someone someday and wondering what to do about her. Seems pretty reasonable to us.
  • The women note that Sally blames Abby for the tornado and Mother Barker assures Abby that they all know it wasn't her fault.
  • At night Abby has a dream that Trembling Sally and a tornado become one, stalking through her house and telling her what's up.
  • As the tornado/Trembling Sally leaves, she says to Abby, "Abyssinia, makes no difference what damage I done. One thing you must remember is this—I had no choice but to harness the wind."
