Marked by Fire Theme of Madness

Oh, Trembling Sally… she really keeps things interesting in Marked by Fire, doesn't she? After a tornado rips through Ponca City, not only does Miss Sally lose her mind and transform into Trembling Sally, she becomes obsessed with killing Abyssinia. She really puts the mad into madness, blaming poor Abby for the tornado's destruction.

To be fair, though, Trembling Sally isn't the only character that navigates murky mental territory. Strong does, too, and it's not easy on Abyssinia, either. No rest for the weary, as they say.

Questions About Madness

  1. What happens to Sally when the tornado comes through? Why does she target Abby so relentlessly? Be specific, and give evidence from the text.
  2. How is Abby's experience of losing Strong influenced by his madness? What does she struggle with in particular? How might his absence have been different if he'd said goodbye?
  3. Are there ways in which madness is good in this book? Does any good come from people losing their minds? Turn to the text to back up your answer.

Chew on This

Try on an opinion or two, start a debate, or play the devil’s advocate.

Strong's sudden disappearance is easier for Abby because she knows he's lost his mind—she doesn't blame him for leaving her.

Trembling Sally is the single greatest obstacle Abby overcomes.
