Young Adult Lit; Coming-of-Age
As is often the case, this coming of age story is written for young adult readers—young adults are pretty familiar with the whole coming-of-age experience, so it makes sense that stories about this journey to adulthood are often oriented toward them.
In this case, we watch Abby from birth into, er, young adulthood, watching her grow from a baby to a child to a teen to a woman on a mission. Is all this growing up easy? Nope; but the language Thomas uses is, making sure YA readers of all ages can follow along as Abby stumbles and sings and swims her way into adulthood.
