This is one of the first lines in the movie, and it quickly introduces us to the entire Baker family, and they're a big one.

MR. BAKER: Are we still having dinner with the Rice Chex?
MRS. BAKER: Riesczecks. […] Oh, and you better learn their names, as of tomorrow they're family.
The movie's small B-plot involves Ginny getting married, expanding the family. There's a lot of comedy to be mined from two family's clashing, and we're disappointed John Hughes doesn't explore that more.

GRANDMA DOROTHY: Sam's lucky she has us, Howard.
GRANDPA HOWARD: Yeah, even if she doesn't appreciate us.
This line's ironic on a couple of levels. The grandparents have accidentally scared Jake away from calling the house again, so Sam isn't lucky. But also, Sam feels they don't appreciate her, because they're part of the whole family who forgot her birthday.
