The True Meaning of Smekday Friendship Quotes

How we cite our quotes: (Part.Paragraph)

Quote #1

"See?" he said. "Boov and humanskind can be friend. I always say!" (1.168)

J.Lo might think so, but Tip's not so sure—at the beginning of the book, she doesn't want a Boov as a friend. In fact, she doesn't even want to speak to the Boov, let alone associate with them.

Quote #2

I thought a moment. He wasn't calling me Tip. Only friends called me Tip. (2.228)

In case you didn't catch it before, Tip does not want J.Lo thinking he's her friend, something she makes perfectly clear time and again. Here's the thing, though: The alien that she's sure she'll hate is actually pretty nice and ends up becoming her BFF.

Quote #3

After the fight, it was more difficult to carry on as we had. I was just permanently steamed, a little at J.Lo, and a little at myself for feeling too exhausted or beaten down to even hate him properly. Given what I'd learned, I thought I was entitled to ditch the Boov somewhere and keep going on my own. (2.244)

Finding out your road trip buddy was part of the peeps that abducted your mom kind of puts a damper on things. Still, Tip is pretty hard on the old Boov. She's willing to ditch him just for what his friends did, but we're not sure that's fair.

Quote #4

"Us? Us?" Curly said. His face was red like a zit waiting to pop. "You'd rather go with a bleeping Boov than stay with your own kind?" (2.645)

Tip might not want to admit it, but she is starting to care about J.Lo now. This is the first time we hear her have second thoughts about her alien sidekick, but it sure won't be the last.

Quote #5

I grabbed J.Lo's arm. I didn't think anything of it at that moment. Later I'd realize it was the first time I'd touched him. Touched him without trying to hit him, anyway. (2.649)

Yep, that's a pretty important distinction between hitting and touching. In any case, Tip starts to treat J.Lo like a friend, not some alien from outer space.

Quote #6

"They are not my friends!" J.Lo shouted. His face was burning pink. "You may not say it! The Gorg are friends of no one! NO ONE!" (2.637)

J.Lo gets all bothered when Tip even suggests that Boov and Gorg are friends… but isn't this type of stereotyping what got them in trouble in the first place? Even though we feel badly for the little Boov for messing up, he's still got a lot to learn when it comes to understanding who he should be friends with.

Quote #7

I remember that day in Florida, and what J.Lo said, and what I decided. How there was nothing to it when it happened. Lightning didn't crash, I did not think, All right then, I'll go to Hell, pardon my language. I just decided to stick by a friend. (2.721)

We applaud Tip for realizing her mistake and owning up to it—she knows J.Lo is her friend, so from then on, nothing else matters to her. She stands up for him and protects him whenever she can, even when it's tough for her.

Quote #8

Don't get me wrong; I like J.Lo fine. I've made that bed. But I'm not sure there's a person in the world I could be with twenty-four hours a day for three weeks without getting a little snippy. (3.1029)

We've all been there: You can't live with someone, you can't live without 'em. It's great that J.Lo and Tip have finally buried the hatchet, but they need some space apart sometimes. Did you notice how they are still friends, though, even though they annoy each other? It's okay to be ticked off at your friends sometimes.

Quote #9

"It seems," said J.Lo, "it seems it would be the best if I stayed. There are things here to do. I can be a help to my family." (3.1374)

When deciding to go home to his planet or not, J.Lo chooses to stay with Tip because they're like family to one another. Look how far they've come.

Quote #10

But here's one: what goes around comes around. And as far as pets go, a cat is a nice thing to have. (3.1577)

We can't help but notice that Tip goes through the same love-hate friendship with the cat as she does with our dude J.Lo. Hmmm… maybe the moral of this story is that friends come in all shapes and sizes.
