Things Not Seen Chapter 2 Summary

Experiments

  • When he goes back up into his room, Bobby puts on a robe so his parents can at least figure out where he is.
  • His dad comes upstairs and starts spouting off about science and how they need to do some experiments to figure out what's really going on and what it means when Bobby says he's invisible. He's such a scientist nerd.
  • Bobby politely tells his dad that he thinks he's going to go back to bed. After his dad leaves, he locks the door so he can be alone for a bit.
  • He writes his name on his hand, and when he waves it around, it just looks like his name is a floating string in the air. Then he tries to chew a piece of gum, and it is visible whenever he opens his mouth. He even rubs his spit on the mirror and finds that he can't see it, so it looks like (er… doesn't look like?) even his saliva is invisible.
  • So it seem his dad is right: The experiments have proven that Bobby is not transparent, and instead he is most definitely invisible.
  • He goes to the bathroom and conducts another experiment by relieving himself through some, ahem, bodily functions. For the record, they sure smell right, but they're invisible, too.
  • After Bobby returns to his room, he somehow manages to fall back asleep even with everything that's going on. And when he wakes up, he sees that his mom and dad have both left—his mom (the professor) had to go in to teach a seminar. It sure looks like they don't expect him to go to school today either.
