Feed Chapter 19 Summary

the undervalued truffle

  • When they arrive at the party, Marty and Link are playing a completely immersive video game called The Cranky Tumble of Dark House, and get annoyed at Titus for getting in the way of the action.
  • Violet appears a bit uneasy when they enter the party, but goes over to say "Hi" to Calista.
  • In the meantime, Quendy and Titus chat, and it's typical high-school stuff: Quendy is upset that Link and Calista are now seeing each other, Quendy is tired of being stepped all over by everyone, and Calista thinks Violet is stuck-up.
  • She also teaches Titus how to flip a shrimp into his mouth with his thumb.
  • From across the room, Titus sees that Violet and Calista now look unhappy with each other. He m-chats Violet to find out what's up, and Violet tells him she made the mistake of using the world "picayune" in conversation with Calista. Now, Calista is snottily pretending that Violet is French.
  • Checking out the party, Titus notices that everyone is nodding their heads in time with music, or have blank eyes because they're watching a feedcast.
  • He randomly hears one kid say, "I think the truffle is like completely undervalued" (19.22) and a girl remark, "But he never pukes when he chugalugs" (19.23).
  • In this moment, Titus realizes that nothing has changed. Even though they've been through getting their brains hacked, everything is completely normal. Phew!
