Slam Chapter 16 Summary

  • In the middle of the night, Sam wakes up and realizes it's the night he zoomed forward to that night in the past.
  • He gets out of bed at Alicia's prompting and changes Roof's diaper.
  • This time around, he doesn't mind sniffing to make sure his son is okay. He knows baby poop isn't all that bad now.
  • Sam tells us how it is now: Every night, he and Alicia are exhausted but wake up a couple times in the night. They're used to it now… almost.
  • He also explains that it's different living through the same night the second time around. This time, he knows the emotions that go along with the actions.
  • Before, he didn't know whether he loved Alicia or not in the future. He's still on the fence about whether he loves her, but at least he's not confused about the timeline anymore. Hey, it's complicated.
  • The next morning, he heads off to college, where some thug picks a fight with him.
  • He's yelling a bunch of stuff about hooking up with Alicia and being Roof's real father. One swift kick and the guy shuts up.
  • Sam knows the guy is just blowing smoke, but it gets to him. It was weird how Alicia broke up with some guy over sex, only to sleep with Sam—a guy she just met—a couple days later. Maybe she already knew she was pregnant and was trying to play it off?
  • He asks Alicia about it when he gets home, and of course it starts a huge fight.
  • Alicia thinks Sam is just trying to get out of being a father, and Sam is annoyed that Alicia can't be honest with him.
  • He loves being Roof's dad, but it is a lot of work. He's not trying to get out of responsibility; he just wants to make sure it's his to begin with.
  • Then he lowers the boom: He makes fun of Alicia for wanting to be a model. Oh, snap.
  • He doesn't really mean it this way, but of course she takes it to mean she's fat now. (Fun fact: Gorgeous models come in all shapes and sizes.)
  • After a lot of groveling and apologizing on Sam's part, they kiss and make up, but Sam knows Alicia is still hurt.
  • Later, Sam's mom comes over to hang out with him and Roof. They chat about college and the fight, but Sam tells her it was nothing. Really.
