Chime Chapter 17 Summary

Mooncrumbs

  • Five nights later, Briony wakes up in the middle of the night to see Eldric at her window.
  • She becomes poetic over his beautiful hands and fingers—so if there was any question about whether Briony felt romantically toward Eldric, consider it officially answered.
  • Briony wonders how he recovered from the illness he came down with the day of the party.
  • The time has come… For what we don't know, but Eldric was nice enough to set up ropes for her to climb down in the night.
  • Briony happily compares herself to Leanne, and realizes Eldric never would have planned an initiation for her. Even if he had, she muses, Leanne was not as strong and capable as Briony.
  • Eldric leads her into the swamp with a task: to follow the bread (or moon) crumbs to a treasure, and not to return without it.
  • Briony happily goes to look for her treasure in the oozing, muddy, dirty swamp; she can barely contain her excitement as she splashes in the swamp water.
  • Briony finds the treasure wrapped in oilcloth and waits for Eldric to open it.
  • Inside is a small wolf girl made of tiny pearls and wire—Eldric has made a treasure in Briony's likeness.
  • Briony is speechless, but she doesn't need to talk because Eldric tells her they must go so as not to be caught.
  • While walking back Briony observes that he seems well after being sick for a while. Eldric says he recovered quickly while reviewing tutor applications with his father.
  • When they arrive home Mr. Larkin and Mr. Clayborne are waiting for them.
