Chime Chapter 28 Summary

Unquiet Spirits

  • Briony goes to the cemetery and summons the children who died of the swamp cough—slowly, one by one, twenty-nine ghost hands reached out to hold hers.
  • As she walks toward Hangman's Square, Briony tells the children a story of the swamp cough that killed them, a story where the adults don't know about Boggy Mun and the cause of their deaths. In her story, however, the ghost children follow Briony to tell the Swampfolk the truth.
  • When they arrive at Hangman's Square Briony climbs onto the gallows to get everyone's attention.
  • And everyone's attention is what she gets. Briony stands atop the gallows with the ghost children surrounding her, and everyone stops and stares.
