Chime Chapter 7 Summary

Girl What Can Hear Ghosts

  • At Mr. Drury's funeral Reverend Larkin gives a sermon as Rose complains about the color black, which she says is not a color at all.
  • While trying to distract Rose from distracting others from the funeral, Briony takes Rose to their mother's grave and laments that Stepmother was not buried in the family plot.
  • At a small plot of small children's gravestones, Briony notices she is having the second sight when earthquake-like symptoms begin to happen to only her.
  • This second sight allows Briony to see the dead children killed by the swamp cough. Sixth sense anyone? Instead of throwing up or slamming cupboards, these ghosts talk about Boggy Mun, the lord of the swamp, who killed them with the swamp cough and will continue to kill until the town stops the swamp-draining project.
  • The ghost children ask Briony to stop the cough and tell the people about Boggy Mun, then they fade away before Briony can ask them if Rose has the swamp cough.
  • Rose says, very matter-of-factly, that she does not have the swamp cough. She then makes Briony cover her ears as the church bells chime twelve o'clock. Briony assures us that this is just another of Rose's everyday eccentricities.
  • Rose wants something called funeral meats.
  • Briony imagines telling the town about Boggy Mun and writes a charming little nursery rhyme in which she tells them, causing them to find out she is a witch and hang her.
  • Rose and Briony walk away from the cemetery toward the Alehouse, and as they do Rose talks more about these meats and generally takes her time.
  • Briony imagines another nursery rhyme where she kills her sister.
