Flora and Ulysses Chapter 38 Summary

Unremitting Darkness

  • Dr. Meescham tells Flora to take a seat on the sofa while she makes some sandwiches.
  • At first she thinks she should let her dad know where she is, but Dr. Meescham reminds her that he already knows.
  • Flora goes over to the couch, sits down, and starts to feel tired.
  • She's also really confused—it's not every day that a heroic squirrel makes its way into your life.
  • Flora notices that Ulysses seems confused, too.
  • As she looks around the room, she sees a giant ship being eaten by an even bigger squid; she stares at the painting and tells Ulysses he should be outraged at people dying in such a way since he's a superhero.
  • Dr. Meescham comes back in and explains that the giant squid is one of the loneliest creatures, and it can go its whole life without seeing one of its kind. The painting was done by her husband, and that's what it makes her think of.
  • That's weird, Flora thinks, especially when she hears Dr. Meescham painted it when he was a youngster and not lonely at all.
  • Plus, if Dr. Meescham did this hen he was young, just imagine what he did when he was old and depressed.
  • This makes Flora think of William Spiver, but she stops herself, telling herself to observe and not hope.
