While The One and Only Ivan is a work of fiction, the book is based on the life of a real gorilla named Ivan who spent three decades living at circus-themed mall in Washington and now lives at Zoo Atlanta. There are many similarities in both Ivan's stories, including being captured along with a twin sister from the Democratic Republic of the Congo as baby gorillas.
