Pudd'nhead Wilson Chapter 11: Pudd'nead's Startling Discovery Summary

  • The twins arrive at Pudd'nhead's house and they all hang out for awhile.
  • Tom shows up at the door. He pretends to be seeing the twins for the very first time, but we're reminded that he already got a glimpse of them when he was looting Aunt Patsy's house.
  • Tom proceeds to tease Pudd'nhead about his failed law career. Then the subject changes to Pudd'nhead's fingerprint collection.
  • Pudd'nhead shows off his collection to the twins. Pudd'nhead takes the prints of Tom and each of the twins.
  • Then Tom persuades Pudd'nhead to read the palms of the twins.
  • Pudd'nhead studies Luigi's hand. He's reluctant to tell what information he's discovered, but eventually reveals that it looks like Luigi has killed someone. Eek.
  • It's true. Luigi admits that he did indeed stab and kill a man, but that he doesn't regret it one bit because the guy had threatened Angelo's life.
  • Angelo tells them that he still keeps the knife that Luigi used to kill the bad guy. He draws a picture of the valuable jewel-encrusted knife to show Pudd'nhead and Tom.
  • It turns out that Tom stole the very same knife during his raid at Aunt Patsy's house. We find this out as he thinks to himself about how lucky he is to have discovered that the jewels on it are real. Jackpot!
  • Puddnhead offers to read Tom's palm, but he refuses to let him.
  • Knock, knock. John Buckstone, a local politician, stops by to invite the twins to a political rally in support of legalizing rum.
  • Luigi eagerly accepts the invitation. Angelo accepts, too, but is a little reluctant since he doesn't drink booze.
  • Buckstone leaves with the twins and Tom tags along (uninvited, of course—this is Tom we're talking about, remember).
  • They get to the rally and everyone is thrilled to see the twins again. The chairman of the club elects them to membership in the club.
  • The crowd demands they be given drinks. Luigi drinks his, but Angelo doesn't touch his.
  • What's up with that? The chairman finds out from Angelo what's going on and he informs the crowd that Angelo is a teetotaler (meaning he doesn't drink any alcohol) and doesn't want to be a member of the club after all. Gasp.
  • Actually, they all end up taking it pretty well. But it's decided that Angelo's membership can't be revoked until the next meeting.
  • Everyone drinks to Angelo's health and they bust out singing, "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow."
  • Meanwhile, Tom has been getting pretty drunk which makes him even more obnoxious than usual. Ugh. He turns to the crowd and makes a crack about the twins that totally offends Luigi.
  • Uh, big mistake, Tom.
  • Luigi kicks (yes, kicks!) Tom into the crowd. The people whom Tom lands on top of are understandably not too happy. Chaos breaks out.
  • And then things really get crazy when a group of torches falls over and. . . FIRE.
  • The town's firefighters rush over to put the fire out (good thing they had some recent practice putting out that fake fire a few chapters ago).
