- Driscoll and Luigi make plans to fight it out again. But, as Driscoll insists, this duel won't take place on a field of honor.
- The twins venture out for a late-night stroll.
- Robbery time. Tom goes up to his room in Driscoll's house and puts on his disguise. His plan, the narrator tells us, is to go into Driscoll's private sitting-room and then into his bedroom to steal the key for his safe so he can rob it.
- The tension builds. Tom takes Luigi's knife with him.
- When Tom gets to the sitting room, he discovers Driscoll fast asleep. Next to him is a cash-box, all closed up. And next to the box is a pile of bank notes.
- Tom goes in and just as he's about to get his hands on the banknotes, Driscoll wakes up, grabs him, and screams. Aaaaahhhhh.
- Panicked, Tom stabs Driscoll and takes off with some of the banknotes. He drops the knife because he thinks it'll be suspicious if someone sees him with it.
- Tom races up to his room. He hears footsteps coming toward the house—it's the twins coming to investigate the scream, presumably.
- In disguise, Tom exits the house through the back.
- As Tom is fleeing the house, the twins, Mrs. Pratt, servants, and a bunch of neighbors are at the front of the house freaking out over the murder.
- Three women hurry by Tom and ask him what's going on, but they don't even wait for him to answer before they rush ahead so he just moseys along.
- Tom gets to the haunted house, takes off his disguise, and tries to clean himself up. Then he burns the disguise.
- Making his grand escape, Tom heads down to the river where he finds a canoe and paddles it to the next town. He gets on a steamboat headed for St. Louis.
- Extra, extra! The next morning when Tom arrives in St. Louis, he reads a report in the newspaper that Luigi murdered Driscoll and that his punishment will be a lynching. Gasp.
- Tom uses his riches to buy Roxy back from the planter and mails the bill of sale to Pudd'nhead.
- Back in Dawson's Landing, Pudd'nhead takes command as mayor and clears everyone out of Driscoll's room except for the twins.
- The sheriff arrives and hauls the twins off to jail. Pudd'nhead agrees to defend them at their trial.
- Justice Robinson and Constable Blake go through the room of the murder and find the knife. Pudd'nhead notices fingerprints on the knife handle. Score!
- Pudd'nhead suggests that they search upstairs so they go up to Tom's room. But they don't find anything suspicious.
- The grand jury indicts Luigi for first degree murder, with Angelo as an accomplice. The twins wait for their trial in the county prison.
- Pudd'nhead checks out the finger prints on the knife handle and concludes that they don't belong to either of the twins. There's gotta be someone else involved, he thinks.
- Arrrrgh. Puddn'head racks his brain trying to figure out who the real culprit might be.
- Hey, what about that mysterious girl he saw that time in Tom's room? Pudd'nhead looks back through all the fingerprints he's collected of girls, but can't find any that match the knife. Sigh.
- Meanwhile, the whole town is feeling sorry for Tom who is giving an Oscar-worthy performance playing the part of the grief-stricken nephew.
