Camilla Cranston

Character Analysis

Camilla is the youngest daughter in the (human) Cranston family. She's seventeen when her family voyages across the Atlantic, and she's in for more adventure than she realizes when she starts crushing on the handsome Lord Peter—Camilla may be young, but she's about to grow up fast and by the end of the book she is engaged to be married. See? We said she'd grow up seriously quick.

If there's one thing we know about Camilla, it's that she's pretty as can be. She likes to flounce around in her dresses, and while her mom is having trouble pulling off the ball gown look, Camilla is killin' it. Her dress isn't even in style, but she's got the looks to make it work.

Camilla isn't just about looks and frilly dresses, though—she's super sweet, too. When she and Louise have their late night chats, Camilla is always really excited to see her little rodent pal:

"Oh, Mousie!" she exclaimed, which seemed to be her name for Louise. "How glad I am to see you. Nobody else on this ship is friendly in the least." (7.73)

Most humans on this ship are afraid of mice—Princess Louise's lady-in-waiting even faints when she sees one—but not Camilla. She's the nicest teenager around, and she's thrilled to have a mousy chum. It seems to us like Camilla is looking for a buddy—and like she's a pretty good pal herself.
