- Khaderbhai leaves the camp and, three days later, comes back dead. No, really—Nazeer drags him back through the snow along with a wounded Ahmed Zadeh.
- Ahmed, dying, complains about Khader's insistence on using horses when donkeys would have been better for the terrain. They had gone to deliver the horses to Khader's village, a point of pride for him, and that had been their doom.
- With both Ahmed and Khader now dead, the camp is attacked by mortars, causing even more wounds and death. Lin plays doctor to the injured, and even donates his own blood to save them. What a guy.
- Nazeer buries Khader in the Muslim tradition, and then goes on with a new mission: to kill the man that had betrayed Khaderbhai.
- The surviving men hold a meeting and discuss what to do. They're worried about Habib, who's still out terrorizing the countryside. In fact, he's the one whom the people who killed Abdel Khader had been after when they attacked Khaderbhai and Nazeer.
- They decide to launch their own mortar attacks, but suddenly Habib shows up, scaring everybody but Khaled half to death. He claims to have information on the enemy positions.
- In the end the men decide to fight against their enemies, even though it will be dangerous. Soon after they are attacked by bombs, helicopters, rockets, and machine guns, and they suffer lots of casualties.
- Lin works hard to try to help the wounded, but several of them die, leaving only nine survivors of the twenty they started the day with. The survivors start off on a four-week march.
