The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants Chapter 19 Summary

  • Epigraph: "My karma ran over my dogma."—Bumper sticker
  • Bridget sits on the porch thinking about sending Carmen the Pants, when Eric arrives.
  • He apologizes for following her to the beach, saying he's older and should know better, but this just ticks Bridget off—she is in charge of her own life, thankyouverymuch.
  • With that, Bridget sends Carmen the Pants.
  • Tibby and Bailey interview Carmen while she wears the Pants—Carmen's hesitant about it, but she doesn't want to be "antagonistic."
  • She notices that Bailey is looking a lot like Tibby these days, and she feels awkward—the last time she spoke to Tibby they fought—but Bailey reminds Carmen that she and Tibby love each other, and tells her to just get over it already.
  • During the interview, Bailey confuses Carmen with her questions: What's going on with dad? And what about the wedding? How can Carmen make her father happy?
  • Also, she tells Carmen it's okay to be mad.
  • Bailey's questions and comments get to Carmen and she starts crying.
  • A little while later, Tibby is worried about Bailey because she doesn't show up to Wallman's, so she bikes to Bailey's house and learns from her neighbor that her whole family is at the hospital.
  • Tibby heads to the hospital, where Bailey's mother explains that Bailey is really sick, and her condition is fatal—she also says that Tibby has made this the best summer of Bailey's life.
  • This is all too much for Tibby to handle, and she storms out of the hospital.
