The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants Chapter 21 Summary

  • Epigraph: "What you do speaks so loudly that I cannot hear what you say." —Ralph Waldo Emerson
  • Everything in the kitchen reminds Tibby of Mimi's frozen corpse. She hears a message from Bailey's mom to please call her, and she looks at Mimi's box, wishing she could curl up in the wood pellets.
  • Carmen finally gets the nerve to call her father. He thanks her for the money, and she tells him she is mad at him—he tries to end the conversation, but she won't let him, and she says she feels neglected and abandoned.
  • He says he is sorry as he cries. This is a first—maybe he's telling the truth.
  • With this behind her (phew), Carmen visits Tibby and is alarmed by her friend's awful appearance and disastrous bedroom.
  • Once again, the phone rings and Tibby lets the machine pick up—again it's Bailey's mother. She really wants Tibby to see Bailey.
  • Tibby kicks Carmen out, but Carmen returns an hour later, begging Tibby to visit Bailey—she even brings her the Pants to wear.
  • In a dreamlike state, Tibby imagines the Pants are telling her she is a terrible person; on the television, she hears Jay Leno say, "Surprise yourself."
  • Sporting dirty hair, a pajama top, and the Pants, Tibby heads to the hospital, crawls into bed with Bailey, and holds her hand.
  • Over in Greece, it's time to celebrate the Assumption of the Virgin—in other words, it's party time (not to be confused with hammer time).
  • Lena watches Kostos kick it up with the ladies—well, with her grandmother and all of the other grandmas—and then she cries.
  • Unable to sleep, she sits at her bedroom window, gazing at the moon. On the second floor, she sees that Bapi is doing the same—two peas of a pod, "proud, silent and fearful" (21.106).
