Splendors and Glooms Chapter 12 Summary

November the Fourteenth at Kensal Green

  • A week after Clara's disappearance, her father sits inside the family mausoleum where all of the other children are buried. He can see the caskets and thinks about how awful it always was to visit here, especially for Clara.
  • He is here because he received an anonymous letter three days ago telling him to wait here with ransom money for his daughter's return. He hasn't alerted any cops to the letter; he wants to make sure that Clara survives.
  • Only Mrs. Wintermute knows about the ransom, and she agrees that they have to pay it. She's been destroyed by grief—even more so than usual—since Clara's disappearance.
  • Dr. Wintermute thinks about how little he knows Clara and how sad she was on the night she disappeared. He vows to himself that if he gets her back, he'll show her exactly how much he loves her.
