Andy's Mom (Laurie Metcalf)

Character Analysis

We don't see too much of Andy's mom. A lot of the time, she's just a pair of feet or a disembodied voice talking to Andy from the hallway, but that doesn't mean Andy's mom is no big deal. In fact, we think she's kind of a supermom.

She seems to be raising two little kids all by herself (we never hear anything about Andy's dad being in the picture). She listens to Andy when he talks, jokes with him, and is kind to him. She even plans a whole birthday party for Andy the week before they move…and buys him the super special Buzz Lightyear space toy that makes him the envy of all his friends.

She's not like a regular mom, she's a cool mom.

The fact that Andy has such a nice mom—and one who obviously cares about him—says a lot about who he is as a kid and the kind of home he's grown up in. (Just compare him to Sid, who's mom and dad are pretty non-existent.) And maybe she's the reason why Andy's so nice to his toys.

We're going to go ahead and give Andy's mom that victory. She's raised him right.

Is Papa a Rolling Stone?

As a side note, remember what we said about Andy's dad not being around? Well, there's a whole lot of fan theories about that one. Did Andy's dad die? Did his parents get divorced? Is that why they're moving? Is Woody the last toy that Andy's dad gave his son before he fell of the face of the Earth? Wow. So many questions and unresolved daddy issues.

The truth is the folks at Pixar couldn't afford to add another human character to the movie. Making realistic looking people was a costly and time-consuming process back in 1995 because their computer programs just didn't have the same capabilities as they do today. And, for the purposes of the story, Andy doesn't really need a dad…so why put him in? (Source)

Besides, Andy's mom has totally got this parenting thing covered.
