Change is both horrible and healing in Walk Two Moons. Though Sal doesn't want change (she doesn't want to leave her hometown of Bybanks, she doesn't want to let her mom go, and she certainly doesn't want to be friendly with Mrs. Cadaver), change happens anyway. But you know what? Change can be kind of awesome, too, and Sal comes to realize that after all her ups and downs. As a result of all the changes she experiences, Sal actually grows and finds her own way in the world.
