Sharon Creech got into writing in 1987 when she submitted a poem to a poetry contest and won $1,000 for it. She realized that maybe she had stories to tell that people wanted to hear. She was totally right. (Source.)
A fortune cookie helped Sharon Creech name this book. She got a fortune once that read, "don't judge a man until you've walked two moons in his moccasins," and she knew that that was the right title for the story she was trying to tell. (Source.)
When Sharon Creech was asked how she describes characters so well, this is what she said:
"I can picture them like they're right there. I try to be in that character's head so that I'm seeing what they're seeing and feeling what they're feeling. I think if you can do that then you can portray a character with whom other people will identify." (Source.)
