He's the minister whose service Steinbeck attends in Vermont. Apparently, Steinbeck admires him for really going all in on the kind of fire-and-brimstone religious message that he feels has gotten lost in the general American attitude toward religion, which had become (in his view) too psychological (i.e., no one does wrong, they just have psychological problems).
