Character Analysis
Steinbeck picks up a young African American student and finally has the civil discussion of race relations that he's been searching for with his previous passengers. Steinbeck describes him as a "passionate and articulate young man with anxiety and fierceness just below the surface" (4.4.131), so it seems that he has (finally) found a passenger he likes.
