Steinbeck's Rich Texan Hosts and Friends

Character Analysis

While he's in Texas, Steinbeck and his wife, Elaine, stay with an unnamed rich (or at least, Steinbeck assumes they're rich) Texas family on their ranch. According to Steinbeck, the accommodations there were quite luxe in terms of food, drink, and amenities, and "The smell of money was everywhere" (4.1.35). Too bad he didn't give us the name—we could use a vacation like that.
