How we cite our quotes: All quotations are from Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
Quote #1
DUDLEY DURSLEY: Well, you're one to talk. Moaning in your sleep every night? At least I'm not afraid of my pillow. "Don't kill Cedric." Who's Cedric, your boyfriend?
HARRY POTTER: Shut up.
DUDLEY DURSLEY: "He's going to kill me, Mum." Where is your mum? Where is your mum, Potter? She dead? Is she dead?
We'll cut Dudley a little slack here—he doesn't know that Cedric is dead. But the thing about Harry's mom? Not cool at all. Harry's got enough grief to deal with without having to get it from his jerk cousin, too.
Quote #2
HERMIONE GRANGER: Dumbledore made us swear that we wouldn't tell you anything.
HARRY POTTER: Dumbledore said that? But why would he want to keep me in the dark? Maybe I could help. After all, I'm the one who saw Voldemort return, I'm the one who fought him, I'm the one who saw Cedric Diggory get killed!
Harry's pretty blunt here. He actually saw a kid die. You'd think that would merit an owl or two over the summer, right? But even though he's had to look death right in the face, it seems Dumbledore still doesn't think it's time for him to grow up.
Quote #3
SIRIUS BLACK: I wanted you to have this. Original Order of the Phoenix. Marlene McKinnon. She was killed two weeks after this was taken. Voldemort wiped out her entire family. Frank and Alice Longbottom. Neville's parents. They suffered a fate worse than death, you ask me. It's been fourteen years and still a day doesn't go by I don't miss your dad.
Sirius might be taking a trip down memory lane, but his little remembrances about the original Order of the Phoenix underscore how dangerous the work they're doing is. People have died fighting Voldemort… and more will by the end of this movie.
Quote #4
LUNA LOVEGOOD: They're called Thestrals. They're quite gentle, really, but people avoid them, because they're a bit...
HARRY POTTER: Different. But why can't the others see them?
LUNA LOVEGOOD: The only people who can see them are those who've seen death.
HARRY POTTER: So, you've known someone who died?
LUNA LOVEGOOD: My mum. She was quite an extraordinary witch, but she did like to experiment, and one day, one of her spells went badly wrong. I was nine.
HARRY POTTER: I'm sorry.
LUNA LOVEGOOD: Yes, it was rather horrible. I still feel very sad about it sometimes. But I've still got Dad.
Harry finally understands why he can see the horses from the carriage… and finds a new friend, too. Watching someone die right in front of your eyes is pretty traumatic. Luna gets it though. And so do the Thestrals.
Quote #5
HARRY POTTER: Facing this stuff in real life is not like school. In school, if you make a mistake you can just try again tomorrow, but out there, when you're a second away from being murdered or watching a friend die right before your eyes... you don't know what that's like.
Harry brings the truth during the first meeting of Dumbledore's Army. Sure it sounds fun to talk about all his awesome adventures (it sure is fun to read and watch them), but living them is a whole different thing. When you might actually be murdered by the most evil dark wizard of all time, it's a whole different ball game.
Quote #6
SEVERUS SNAPE: In the past, it was often the Dark Lord's pleasure to invade the minds of his victims creating visions designed to torture them into madness. Only after extracting the last exquisite ounce of agony, only when he had them literally begging for death, would he finally kill them.
Yeah, Voldemort's a real treat. Snape's warning here is important. If Harry thinks he'll just float off peacefully into death he has another thing coming.
Quote #7
ARTHUR WEASLEY: To Harry Potter, without whom I may not be here.
Mr. Weasley gives this toast to Harry after his visions save him from Voldemort's snake attack. This time, Harry's connection to Voldemort saves a life, but the next time he sees a vision of Sirius in trouble it will end up leading to his godfather's death. Bummer.
Quote #8
LUCIUS MALFOY: Did you actually believe, or are you truly naïve enough to think that children stood a chance against us? I'll make this simple for you, Potter. Give me the prophecy now, or watch your friends die.
This is a pretty awful choice. Harry doesn't want to hand over this prophecy—
he knows it's a weapon that Voldemort will use against him—but he also can't stand by and watch his friends die. Harry chooses life. Luckily the prophecy doesn't make it past the battleground.
Quote #9
HARRY POTTER: The prophecy said neither one can live while the other one survives. It means one of us is going to have to kill the other, in the end.
DUMBLEDORE: Yes.
HARRY POTTER: Why didn't you tell me?
DUMBLEDORE: For the same reason you tried to save Sirius. For the same reason your friends saved you. After all these years, after all you've suffered, I didn't want to cause you any more pain. I cared too much about you.
We sympathize with Dumbledore on this one. When was he supposed to tell Harry this? On his first night at Hogwarts? "Looks like you've been sorted into Gryffindor… and you'll need to kill Voldemort before he kills you. Care for some pudding?" Finding out that more death is in his future is a bitter pill for Harry to swallow.
Quote #10
HARRY POTTER: How come you're not at the feast?
LUNA LOVEGOOD: I've lost all my possessions. Apparently people have been hiding them.
HARRY POTTER: That's awful!
LUNA LOVEGOOD: Oh, it's all good fun. But as this is the last night, I really do need them back.
HARRY POTTER: Do you want any help finding them?
LUNA LOVEGOOD: I'm sorry about your godfather, Harry.
HARRY POTTER: Are you sure you don't want any help looking?
LUNA LOVEGOOD: That's all right. Anyway, my mum always said things we lose have a way of coming back to us in the end. If not always in the way we expect.
Luna always knows what to say. She's the only one who says she's sorry about Sirius being dead. And she also has this lovely piece of wisdom about the things we lose coming back to us. Looks like Sirius will be with Harry for a long time… in his heart.
