Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix Power Quotes

How we cite our quotes: All quotations are from Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

Quote #1

CORNELIUS FUDGE: Oh! Albus... I see you got our notice about the time change of the hearing...

DUMBLEDORE: I must have missed it; but by a happy mistake, I arrived at the Ministry three hours early.

Cute move, Fudge. The Minister of Magic tried to change the time of Harry's trial to keep Dumbledore from showing up. It didn't work, but it's just a little reminder that Fudge has the power to make Harry and Dumbledore's lives very difficult.

Quote #2

HARRY POTTER: Sirius, what are you doing here? If somebody sees you...

SIRIUS BLACK: I had to see you off, didn't I? What's life without a little risk?

This is a pretty risky move. Sirius is showing up at Platform 9 ¾ where he could be recognized and hauled back to Azkaban. But Sirius has been so powerless for so long that he's just gotta seize a little bit of that control back by breaking the rules.

Quote #3

DOLORES UMBRIDGE: The Ministry of Magic has always considered the education of young witches and wizards to be of vital importance. Although each headmaster has brought something new to this historic school progress for the sake of progress must be discouraged. Let us preserve what must be preserved, perfect what can be perfected, and prune practices that ought to be prohibited.

Professor Umbridge's speech may be all passive-aggressive and flowery, but her meaning is pretty clear. The Ministry wants control of Hogwarts and now they've sent their henchwoman to do the job.

Quote #4

DOLORES UMBRIDGE: You will be pleased to know from now on, you will be following a carefully structured, Ministry-approved course of defensive magic. Yes?

HERMIONE GRANGER: There's nothing in here about using defensive spells.

DOLORES UMBRIDGE: Using spells? Well I can't imagine why you would need to use spells in my classroom.

RON WEASLEY: We're not gonna use magic?

DOLORES UMBRIDGE: You will be learning about defensive spells in a secure, risk-free way.

Knowledge is power, right? If Professor Umbridge (and the Ministry of Magic) can keep the students at Hogwarts from learning any actual magic, there's less chance those students will use that magic against the Ministry. Of course, there's also a greater chance they'll be killed in a Death Eater attack, but none of the bureaucrats are thinking that far ahead.

Quote #5

DOLORES UMBRIDGE: Pardon me, Professor, but what exactly are you insinuating?

MINERVA MCGONAGALL: I am merely requesting that when it comes to my students you conform to the prescribed disciplinary practices.

DOLORES UMBRIDGE: So silly of me, but it sounds as if you're questioning my authority in my own classroom, Minerva.

MINERVA MCGONAGALL: Not at all, Dolores, merely your medieval methods.

DOLORES UMBRIDGE: I am sorry, dear, but to question my practices is to question the Ministry, and by extension, the Minister himself. I am a tolerant woman, but the one thing I will not stand for is disloyalty.

MINERVA MCGONAGALL: Disloyalty?

DOLORES UMBRIDGE: Things at Hogwarts are far worse than I feared.

Let's get ready to ruuuuuuuumble. Professor McGonagall and Professor Umbridge go head to head here about who has the authority to punish students. Umbridge ends the discussion with an oldie but goodie—she questions McGonagall's wizard patriotism. If you don't let Umbridge torture students, then the terrorists win!

Quote #6

SIRIUS BLACK: The latest intelligence is that Fudge doesn't want you trained in combat.

RON WEASLEY: Combat? What does he think, that we're forming some sort of wizard army?

SIRIUS BLACK: That's exactly what he thinks. That Dumbledore is assembling his own forces to take on the Ministry. He's becoming more paranoid by the minute.

Fudge isn't the brightest bulb, is he? The Minister of Magic is so obsessed with holding onto his own power, that he's spinning all sorts of wild conspiracy theories. The irony is that, by refusing to teach Hogwarts students, he does force them to create an army—Dumbledore's Army.

Quote #7

SYBIL TRELAWNEY: Sixteen years I've lived and taught here! Hogwarts is my home! You can't do this!

DOLORES UMBRIDGE: Actually, I can […]

DUMBLEDORE: Professor McGonagall, might I ask you to escort Sybil back inside? […]

DOLORES UMBRIDGE: Dumbledore, may I remind you that under the terms of Educational Decree Number 23, as enacted by the Minister—

DUMBLEDORE: You have the right to dismiss my teachers. You do not, however, have the authority to banish them from the grounds. That power remains with the headmaster.

Yet another staff showdown. Umbridge may have the authority to fire Professor Trelawney, but Dumbledore's still headmaster. Umbridge doesn't take threats to her power lightly though. It's clear she'll keep grabbing at control until she gets what she wants.

Quote #8

CORNELIUS FUDGE: Dawlish, Shacklebolt, you will escort Dumbledore to Azkaban to await trial for conspiracy.

DUMBLEDORE: Ah, I thought we might hit this little snag. You seem to be laboring under the delusion that I am going to—what is the phrase?—come quietly.

Seriously, Fudge, don't you know by now that you're not just gonna be able to lock Dumbledore away? Dumbledore shows who's really in control when he disappears in a burst of flames and leaves everyone in his office thinking, "What the what?!"

Quote #9

DOLORES UMBRIDGE: Very well. You give me no choice, Potter. As this is an issue of Ministry security, you leave me with no alternative. The Cruciatus Curse ought to loosen your tongue.

HERMIONE GRANGER: That's illegal!

DOLORES UMBRIDGE: What Cornelius doesn't know won't hurt him.

Wow. Umbridge really is evil. There are really no limits to what she'll do to get what she wants. If she has to perform illegal spells and torture children to get information… then so be it. All this power has really gone to her head.

Quote #10

DOLORES UMBRIDGE: You have no business here, centaur! This is a ministry matter. Lower your weapons! I warn you: under the law as creatures of near-human intelligence... Protego! How dare you, you filthy half-breed! Incarcerus!

HERMIONE GRANGER: Please! Please, stop it! Please!

DOLORES UMBRIDGE: No, enough! I will have order!

We get the feeling this is not gonna work out well for Umbridge. She strolls into the forest and then insults the centaurs like she has authority over them. Shockingly, they're not so swayed by her tough talk and it's off she goes. Better luck next time, Dolores.
