Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet Chapter 38 Summary

Stranger (1942)

  • During the drive back home from Camp Harmony, Henry is deep in thought and wondering if he did the right thing by letting Keiko go without telling her that he sees her as more than a friend.
  • When Henry gets to his apartment, his mother is crying and there's the doctor there. He immediately asks them where his father is and what's wrong.
  • They tell him that his father had a stroke and that maybe it was caused by recent stress. This makes Henry feel awful and guilty.
  • He goes into the room where his father is lying, looking very sick and frail. He says a formal apology to his father in Chinese, but instead of accepting it, his father manages to squeeze out just one word.
  • He calls Henry a stranger… so it looks like he hasn't forgiven his son after all.
