Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet Chapter 5 Summary

Keiko (1942)

  • When Henry gets to school on this day, though, he finds there's a new student—an Asian girl.
  • She's also on lunch duty with him, and she introduces herself as Keiko Okabe. Henry realizes this girl is actually Japanese; he's never met or talked to a Japanese person before.
  • As they dole out the school lunches to other students, the kids start making fun of them for being Asian. Henry doesn't mind, though, because he and Keiko smile at each other and then eat some canned pears afterward. He finally has a friend.
