Midwinterblood Part 2, Chapter 10 Summary

  • Nancy is just about to show Edward what she found—some wood fragments near the jaw and chest of the adult skeleton—when they hear Mat scream.
  • Everyone rushes to the trench. They see Mat lying there in the dirt. He's probably broken a bone, but at least he hasn't been buried by the dirt from the sides of the trench. Little victories, right?
  • Then Mat motions up to the bomb. Yikes.
  • Edward tells the girls to run to Eric's house so his mother can call someone to help them out. But who can help them? There's no police on the island, so they'll have to send a boat to the mainland. Things are not looking good for Mat.
  • Just then, Edward hears Merle scream as Eric rushes from the house and toward the bomb.
  • Edward tells him to back away because it's dangerous, but Eric reaches down and grabs the bomb anyway. Everyone watches tensely as Eric carefully carries the bomb toward the sea and drops it in.
  • It drops in without exploding and they all rush to Eric. Merle and Edward are in tears, then Edward remembers Mat in the trench; he asks if Eric can help them pull him out and he does.
  • Later, once Mat is out of the trench and everyone's safe, they are all sitting at Merle's house. She's made them some tea to calm their nerves and help them sleep.
  • Merle tells Eric he could have been killed but Eric says, "No. I couldn't die. I'm not quite the last."
  • Edward really likes Eric and Merle. He's never had any kids of his own, but he'd be proud to call Eric his son, even if he does say weird stuff sometimes. Maybe it's not too late for him, after all.
