Midwinterblood Part 3, Chapter 7 Summary

  • Days pass and David's ankle gets better. He's out of morphine, but Rebecka's been giving him some special tea to take the pain away.
  • It's a recipe that's been passed down through the generations in her family, made with a special flower that only grows on the western side of the island. One that looks a bit like a creepy dragon.
  • Rebecka tells David that the flower can work miracles if you know how to use it.
  • David thinks she might be right, because his ankle is feeling a whole lot better than it did.
  • Rebecka gives David some of Erik's clothes, but David feels a little weird about it since Erik doesn't really seem to like him.
  • More time passes and David is healing, but the family is still fighting about his presence. He vows that once he's better he'll leave them, even if it means being captured by enemy soldiers.
  • One day, things have gotten so tense that David demands they kick him out of the house—he tells them he can fight his way out of anything, even with the broken ankle. This isn't exactly true, but David can't stand the thought that he's putting their family in danger.
  • Erik tells him to stay, though, and then he and Benjamin head out to work.
  • David talks to Rebecka about the war. They might not want to be a part of it, but they're going to have to be eventually since the whole world is at war.
  • Rebecka explains that it's not just the war.
  • They had a daughter named Sarah. A while back, though, some planes flew overhead and dropped their bombs to lighten their load. One landed near where Sarah was playing and she was killed.
  • This is why Erik's so mad. They didn't even want to be part of the war, but it managed to take their child away from them. How is that fair?
