The Goonies Courage Quotes

How we cite our quotes: All quotations are from The Goonies.

Quote #1

MOUTH: That's right. And anyway, if Chester Copperpot didn't find it, how would we find it?

What could be more terrifying to a kid than the prospect that some older, experienced adult died doing something that you're trying to do? To know that good ol' Chester croaked inside the tunnels, but still have the guts to keep on going…that takes some real courage. Especially since, even after they do find the treasure, they can't really go back to Chester and rub it in his face…which is always the most satisfying part of any accomplishment.

Quote #2

CHUNK: I don't know about it, Mikey. Hey, it's gettin' late, and hey, that's a summer place. What's it doing open in the fall?

Excuses, excuses, excuses. What would we do without them, right?

Chunk is definitely the chicken of the bunch, but even he doesn't turn tail and run when the going gets scary. He could have abandoned the rest of the gang at any time—especially when he found the car with the bullet holes and had to fear for his life—but his courage kicked in and urged him back toward the restaurant, where danger surely awaited him.

And yeah, when he's being interrogated by the Fratellis, Chunk does break down and cry, but…courage takes many forms. Sometimes it's the blubbering kind.

Quote #3

CHUNK: I'm not afraid of the dark. I like the dark. I love the dark, but I hate nature. I hate nature.

Often, when we're most in need of courage, we talk to ourselves in hopes that we'll make ourselves feel better about a situation. Did you really just hear somebody moving around outside, or was that just a tree moving in the wind? Is that person following you down that dark alley, or are they just going to the same place you're going? Does that vampire want to suck your blood, or is he really just interested in looking at the tag on your shirt to see where you got it?

Here Chunk tries to tell himself that there's nothing to worry about, even when he knows there's plenty to worry about. It doesn't work, but you have to give him props for the effort.
