Richard "Data" Wang (Ke Huy Quan)

Character Analysis

Go Go Gadget Boxing Glove

If James Bond's buddy Q were a 12-year-old boy with a lot of free time on his hands, he would be Richard "Data" Wang.

From his Slick Shoes to his Pinchers of Peril to his Bully Blinders, Data has enough innovative inventions on his person to impress any spy. (Not to mention any English teacher who's big into alliteration.)

You can certainly make an argument that, among the Goonies, he's the star of the show. Everyone else is known for dropping things, or talking too much, or some other unfortunate handicap. But Data is a boy genius. Not all of his inventions are a hit, or even in working order, but he would have been dead meat if not for his Pinchers of Peril. And quite a few times he either delays or disarms the Fratellis.

In short, he's a perfect illustration of a theme running through the movie—that smarts, creativity and heart will outdo brawn (and firearms). It may not always be the case in the real world, sadly, but in this little adventure of ours, ingenuity is certainly rewarded.
