The Goonies Theme of Friendship

At its core, The Goonies is a movie about friendship. You can tell from all the insults, snide remarks, and noogies.

The Goonies may not all get along perfectly every second of every day, but guess what? That's friendship. In the end, they care deeply about everyone they've chosen to associate with, and would be devastated if they were to be separated. And…that's really all that matters

Questions about Friendship

  1. Mouth forces Chunk to humiliate himself in order to be allowed into the Walsh home. Doesn't seem like a very "friendly" thing to do. Would you consider Mouth and Chunk friends? Why or why not?
  2. The Goonies all share a bond…but so do the Fratellis. Is there anything fundamentally different between a bond between friends and a bond between family members?
  3. Sloth and Chunk become insta-friends. Why do they connect so quickly, and is their friendship likely to last?
  4. Do you have a circle of friends you'd consider to be your "Goonies"? In what ways do your relationships differ from those presented in the film?

Chew on This

Andy chose not to go up Troy's bucket because she considers maintaining friendships more important than pursuing romantic relationships.

Sloth and Chunk aren't really friends, because you can't be "friends" with someone you just met and don't know anything about (other than the fact that they like candy bars).
