Character Analysis
Doran appeared earlier in Joyce's work, as a character in "The Boarding House" in Dubliners. He is an out-and-out drunk, and Gifford points out in his annotations that Doran's drinking bender provides one of the novel's major odysseys. Here, he appears briefly in "Lotus-Eaters," and then is passed out on the bar at the start of "Cyclops." He comes over to feed the citizen's dog, Garryowen, from the tin that the citizen later throws at Bloom. Doran laments the death of Dignam, and then wanders out of the bar. In Bloom's dreams in "Circe," Doran again appears as a drunk, nearly slipping off of his stool.
