John Henry Menton

Character Analysis

In real life, Menton was a solicitor and commissioner of affidavits. In the novel, he is presented as ex-employer of the fictional Patrick Dignam. Menton does not come off well in his brief appearance in "Hades." Apparently, he became embarrassed in front of Molly Bloom and some others over a simple game of bowls he was playing with Leopold, and began a verbal fight with him. It is clear that Menton has not yet gotten over the fight. He continues to deride Bloom, and when Bloom points out that he has a dent in his hat at the end of the episode, Menton snubs him. Later, in "Circe," Bloom imagines Menton as one of the members of the jury that will condemn him.
