Lipoti Virag Bloom

Character Analysis

Lipoti Virag is Leopold's grandfather. In "Circe," while Bloom is engaging in one of his elaborate dreamscapes in Bella Cohen's brothel, Lipoti appears and begins to lecture him about sex. His grandfather appears to be particularly concerned because Bloom is the last of his line, and thus it rests on him to carry on the Bloom family name. Lipoti suggests that, for this reason, Bloom does not even understand his own sexual potency. Before disappearing, Lipoti's sexual obsessions turn to the Virgin Mary. He offers a number of blasphemies suggesting that there is no way she is actually a Virgin.
