Character Analysis
Lynch has appeared earlier in Joyce's work, as a good friend of Stephen's in Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. Here, he appears as a medical student with the gathered men in "Oxen of the Sun." He jokes along with them, and at several points gives Stephen a hard time for being so self-serious and ambitious. At the end of the episode, Stephen convinces Lynch to go to Nighttown with him. Lynch accompanies Stephen to Bella's brothel, where he flirts with the prostitute, Kitty. When Stephen gets in the fight with the English constable, Lynch leaves Bloom to deal with him. Stephen calls Lynch Judas.
