How It All Goes Down
Same Day
- Their meeting with Galina an utter failure, Leo and Raisa pin their hopes on Ivan. They wait outside grocery store near his apartment until he arrives home for the day.
- After a bit of time—and tons of second-guessing from Leo—the two of them see "Ivan approach from the other end of the street" (4.36.6). They creep over to his apartment and knock on the door.
- Ivan's shocked to see Raisa—he's even more shocked to finally meet Leo. He invites them inside and they tell him everything they know about the murders.
- Though he doesn't have any insight, Ivan knows a former MGB interrogator who might. He immediately calls him.
- This sets off alarm bells in Leo's head. A schoolteacher like Ivan shouldn't have a phone. The only way that would make sense would be if he was... an MGB agent.
- Leo leaps forward, "grabbing the phone and twisting its cord tight around Ivan's neck" (4.36.90). Raisa freaks out, but Leo explains his suspicions—suspicions that are proved true after Raisa finds Ivan's copy of For Whom the Bell Tolls with a list of every person who had borrowed it.
- With that, Leo finishes Ivan off.
