Child 44 Chapter 51 Summary

How It All Goes Down

Same Day

  • The boy is walking by the trucks when his grain bag rips, spilling all over the ground. He re-packs his bag as the soldiers yell at him to hurry it up.
  • This is just a ploy. While the boy was playing his role, Leo and Raisa hid "underneath their [...] trucks" (4.51.8). Clever.
  • So Leo and Raisa hang out—ah, we crack ourselves up. Raisa is strained by the effort, so she uses a piece of fabric to tie herself to the bottom of the truck.
  • Suddenly, Leo notices dogs approach—those pups will sniff them out for sure. Luckily, he manages to get the boy's attention, prompting him to run up and distract the dogs.
  • Their search complete, the men return to their trucks. Raisa manages to untie the cloth just before they pull away.
