- Nesterov is on a train back to his hotel. His recent investigations show that news of the murders has reached the masses, with most blaming them on "Nazi soldiers" left behind after the war (4.29.2).
- The train arrives, and Nesterov heads back to his hotel room. He's greeted by an awful sight: his wife tied to a chair, face bloodied. Several MGB officers—including the one from the beach—are standing behind her, holding his documents on the murders. They've been arrested.
