Entwined Chapter 3 Summary

  • Azalea flips out and runs out into the woods to find her dad so she can yell at him, but he's not there; she breaks down crying until she remembers the promise she made to her mother to take care of her sisters.
  • She finds them inside the royal nursery, and everyone cries for a while. Bramble, who's the next oldest, is angry at Azalea, but Clover (third oldest) shows Azalea the new baby: Lily. Their mother gave birth just before dying.
  • Azalea leads all the girls in a curtsying dance to welcome the new baby to their family, and while they dance, Azalea feels a warm, flickery sort of magic.
  • Then they hear the King's voice, meaning he's back from his ride, so Azalea brings the girls to see him—but he says to his steward that he doesn't want to see them. Which the girls overhear and, as you might guess, are pretty hurt by.
  • Azalea gets her sisters settled in in the small room they all share, and then she goes to keep watch over her mother's corpse, which is an Eathesbury tradition.
  • She looks at the silver tea service, which is enchanted. The High King D'Eathe used to work all kinds of magic on the palace before he was overthrown, including ensnaring people's souls after killing them. Creepy.
