The Alchemist Act 2, Scene 4 Summary

  • With Mammon and Surly out of the house, Subtle and Doll come back into the room all excited about conning Mammon. They can't believe what a chump he is.
  • Obviously, Doll's going to have sex with Mammon so Subtle can use it as an excuse for not producing the philosopher's stone.
  • Face and Subtle joke about how Mammon has taken the bait and is about to be "twitched" (pulled out of the water like a fish).
  • Subtle reminds Doll that she has to keep pretending to be some lord's sister whenever Mammon's around if they're going to keep him on the hook.
  • Now we find out that Mammon's going to bring a bunch of metal stuff from his house for Subtle to turn into gold.
  • There's a knock at the door. It's an Anabaptist named Ananias. Subtle refers to him as one of the "holy brethren of Amsterdam."
  • Historical Brain Snack: As Jonson was writing this play, Anabaptists were considered a seriously radical and extremist sect of Puritans. Jonson really, really, really dislikes these folks (we talk more about it in Themes: Religion).
  • Subtle and Face have been waiting for Ananias because they know the Anabaptists want to get their hands on the philosopher's stone. Plus, they want to sell him all of Mammon's metal goods.
