The Alchemist Act 3, Scene 5 Summary

  • Subtle makes a big entrance into the room. He's disguised as the "Priest of Fairy."
  • After he makes sure that Dapper has performed the ritual, Subtle announces that Dapper's good to go—he can now meet the Fairy Queen.
  • But first, Dapper has to be blindfolded. Plus, he's got to take all the money out of his pockets and throw it down on the floor.
  • Doll enters in her Fairy Queen get-up and pretends she's got a bunch of little "elves" with her.
  • They all start pinching Dapper and the "elves" demand to know if Dapper has any more money or jewelry on him.
  • Just as Dapper's being shaken down for everything in his pockets, Mammon shows up.
  • (Whoops. If Dapper sees Doll doing some freaky Fairy Queen ritual he'll know he's being played like a chump.)
  • Face manages to keep Mammon outside the house until Subtle and Doll stash Dapper in the "privy" (the bathroom) with a piece of gingerbread shoved in his mouth as a gag.
  • Dapper thinks this is a perfectly good idea, so long as it will make the Fairy Queen happy.
