- As the two hooded mice lead Despereaux down to the dungeons, he thinks of how much he'll miss all of this—especially listening to music, reading books, and seeing Princess Pea.
- He begs the hooded mice to let him have one last word with the princess, and they say no. But then he recognizes one of their voices; his brother Furlough is one of the hooded mice!
- Even though Despereaux feels betrayed, he thinks that maybe Furlough will feel sorry enough for him to allow him this one last wish.
- But Furlough doesn't cave in. He delivers Despereaux right to the door of the dungeons and pushes his brother down the stairs…wearing the red thread of death around his neck. Uh-oh.
